The Inner Space Center Team engages worldwide with a number of science, technology, and education partner organizations to provide scientific and educational support. Each project page features a description and links to the project’s website.
NASA Systematic Underwater Biogeochemical Science and Exploration Analog (SUBSEA)
SUBSEA brings together the worlds of Space and Ocean exploration science and is a partnership between NASA, NOAA, the Ocean Exploration Trust and various academic centers across the U.S. The SUBSEA team will have members on the E/V Nautilus as well as in the ISC Mission Control, where they will coordinate operations through remote communications.
Northwest Passage Project
The Northwest Passage Project (NPP) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project that centers on a research expedition into the Arctic’s Northwest Passage, which will engage undergraduate and graduate students in hands-on research as they explore the changing Canadian Arctic Archipelago and collect data. The NPP will include real-time interactions from sea, an ultra-high definition 2-hour documentary, and related community events.
Discovery of Sound in the Sea (DOSITS)
The Discovery of Sound in the Sea project has produced a high quality, comprehensive, online resource that contains peer reviewed content on how people and animals produce and use sound underwater. The site also contains several resources, such as audio and technology galleries and interviews with scientists.
Hurricanes: Science and Society (HSS)
Major goals of Hurricanes: Science and Society are to provide foundational science for understanding complex scientific content, inform visitors about current scientific and technological advances, and to help visitors make good decisions prior to and during a hurricane emergency. The popular interactive hurricane history timeline provides an overview of the most important historical storms.
Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Alliance
The CCEP Alliance Office, located at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, serves as the hub for the CCEP program. It facilitates communication among the CCEP projects, enables and nurtures cross-project coordination and collaboration, and supports the dissemination of Alliance resources. The CCEP Alliance Office also fosters communication with the larger climate change education community.
Consortium for Ocean Science Exploration and Engagement (COSEE)
The Consortium for Ocean Science Exploration and Engagement (COSEE) is an international nonprofit network of ocean science and education institutions working together to transform ocean sciences education. COSEE provides educational programs, materials, and tools that link cutting-edge ocean science research with outreach and education initiatives to increase ocean literacy among diverse audiences and develop the highly trained workforce needed to meet today’s challenges.
Marine Technology for Teachers and Students (MaTTS) Project
The Marine Technology for Teachers and Students (MaTTS) Project, is based at the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Center and the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus. The project created opportunities for teachers and students to experience new technologies related to exploring the global ocean and discover pathways to marine careers.
Science on a Sphere (SOS) module: “Exploring the Unknown Ocean”
The global ocean encompasses 75% of our blue planet, yet less than 10% of the waters below its surface have been explored. Advances in ocean science technologies are taking humans to previously unexplored waters, revealing unimaginable subsea landscapes, teaming with life. This ISC-produced, sphere-based video program, funded by the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation, tells the story behind these ocean technologies, the people that operate them, the scientists the use them, and the amazing discoveries they make together.

Explore With Us: Rhode Island Shipwrecks
From September 2nd to September 6th, 2015, the URI/UNOLS R/V Endeavor embarked on a mission to explore shipwrecks near Block Island using new technologies. A telepresence system was built into Endeavor, allowing the EN566 expedition to be broadcast live to the Internet and Rhode Island PBS.
The Unknown Ocean: Exploring Inner Space
The Unknown Ocean project, funded by the NOAA Office of Education, produced educational video programming about deep-sea exploration. These videos are available on interactive aquarium and museum kiosks and as an interpreted live show. They can also be viewed on the ISC YouTube Channel Unknown Ocean Playlist.
The ISC Information Access System
This project, which was funded by the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation’s Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), facilitated the development of a prototype system to gain online access to Inner Space Center data archives. It serves as a model for the replay of oceanographic expedition data, especially during remotely-operated-vehicle (ROV) operations. Continued development of the portal for this system would result in a publicly accessible data archive for the ISC.
